Meaning · English
From his navel came the middle air, from his head the sky took shape, from his feet the earth, from his ear the directions. So they arranged the worlds.
The world is read off the standing body. The head is highest, so it becomes the sky. The feet touch the ground, so they become the earth. The navel sits between, and from it comes the middle air, the open space between earth and sky. The ear takes in sound from every side, so from it come the directions. Sāyaṇa says the gods did the shaping, the same gods who are carrying out the offering of the Purusha.
Stand someone against a door frame to mark their height: a pencil line at the top of the head, another at the waist, the floor under the feet. Three marks on one frame. The hymn does the same with the world: sky at the head, middle air at the navel, earth at the feet, all measured from one body.
