सप्तास्यासन्परिधयस्त्रिः सप्त समिधः कृताः। देवा यद्यज्ञं तन्वाना अबध्नन्पुरुषं पशुम्

Meaning · English

Seven sticks were set around the fire, and three times seven pieces of fuel were made ready, when the gods, spreading out the sacrifice, bound the Purusha as its victim.

At a Vedic altar the fire is ringed by sticks laid around it and fed with sticks of kindling. This sacrifice has seven of the first and twenty-one of the second. Its victim is the Purusha himself, bound by the gods. Sāyaṇa reads every piece as part of the world. The seven enclosing sticks are seven poetic meters. The twenty-one fuel sticks are the twelve months, five seasons, three worlds and the sun. For him the whole rite happens in thought, and the gods are the breath and senses of the creator.

Before a wedding meal, a cook sets out every pan and measures each portion, and all of this counting happens before anything goes on the flame. The seven sticks and the twenty-one work the same way. The frame of the world is measured out first, and the one body offered inside it supplies everything the frame will hold.

अग्नि के चारों ओर सात लकड़ियाँ घेरे के रूप में रखी गईं और तीन गुना सात समिधाएँ तैयार की गईं, जब देवताओं ने यज्ञ का विस्तार करते हुए पुरुष को उसके बलि-पशु के रूप में बाँधा।

वैदिक वेदी पर अग्नि को चारों ओर रखी लकड़ियों से घेरा जाता है और समिधा की लकड़ियों से प्रज्वलित रखा जाता है। इस यज्ञ में पहली तरह की लकड़ियाँ सात हैं और दूसरी तरह की इक्कीस। इसका बलि-पशु स्वयं पुरुष है, जिसे देवताओं ने बाँधा है। सायण हर लकड़ी को संसार का एक अंग मानते हैं। घेरने वाली सात लकड़ियाँ सात काव्य-छंद हैं। इक्कीस समिधाएँ बारह महीने, पाँच ऋतुएँ, तीन लोक और सूर्य हैं। उनके लिए पूरा अनुष्ठान विचार में घटित होता है, और देवता सृष्टिकर्ता के प्राण और इंद्रियाँ हैं।

विवाह के भोज से पहले रसोइया हर बर्तन सजा देता है और हर हिस्सा नाप लेता है, और यह सारी गिनती आँच पर कुछ भी चढ़ने से पहले ही हो जाती है। सात लकड़ियाँ और इक्कीस समिधाएँ भी इसी तरह काम करती हैं। संसार का ढाँचा पहले नापकर तैयार किया जाता है, और उसके भीतर अर्पित किया गया एक शरीर वह सब कुछ देता है जो यह ढाँचा अपने भीतर समेटेगा।
