यज्ञेन यज्ञमयजन्त देवास्तानि धर्माणि प्रथमान्यासन्। ते ह नाकं महिमानः सचन्त यत्र पूर्वे साध्याः सन्ति देवाः

Meaning · English

Through sacrifice the gods sacrificed the sacrifice. These were the first laws. Those great ones reached the vault of heaven, where the Sadhyas, gods of earlier times, live.

The gods made an offering in which the offering, the means of offering and the one honoured were the same thing: the Purusha himself. That first act became the pattern for all that followed. The word rendered 'laws' is dharma, the ways that hold a world together and keep it standing. Sayana reads the gods as the life-powers of the creator, offering in thought rather than with fire. The second half turns to people. The great ones who honour this rite reach heaven, where the Sadhyas, an older company of gods, already dwell.

Picture a field of tall grass that someone crossed first. Each later walker steps where the grass is already pressed down, until the line becomes a path and leads everyone to the same far gate. The first offering is that first crossing, and the Sadhyas are the ones already standing at the gate.

यज्ञ के द्वारा देवताओं ने यज्ञ का यजन किया। ये ही पहले नियम थे। वे महान जन स्वर्ग के शिखर तक पहुँचे, जहाँ पूर्वकाल के देवता साध्य निवास करते हैं।

देवताओं ने ऐसी आहुति दी जिसमें आहुति, आहुति का साधन और जिसका सम्मान हुआ, तीनों एक ही थे: स्वयं पुरुष। वही पहला कर्म आगे आने वाली सब बातों का आदर्श बन गया। जिस शब्द को 'नियम' कहा गया है, वह धर्म है, यानी वे रीतियाँ जो संसार को जोड़े रखती हैं और उसे टिकाए रखती हैं। सायण इन देवताओं को सृष्टिकर्ता की प्राण-शक्तियाँ मानते हैं, जो अग्नि से नहीं बल्कि मन में आहुति देती हैं। दूसरा भाग मनुष्यों की ओर मुड़ता है। जो महान जन इस विधि का सम्मान करते हैं, वे स्वर्ग पहुँचते हैं, जहाँ साध्य, देवताओं का एक पुराना समूह, पहले से निवास करते हैं।

ऊँची घास के एक मैदान की कल्पना कीजिए, जिसे किसी ने सबसे पहले पार किया था। बाद में चलने वाला हर व्यक्ति वहीं पैर रखता है जहाँ घास पहले से दबी हुई है, यहाँ तक कि वह रेखा पगडंडी बन जाती है और सबको उसी दूर के द्वार तक ले जाती है। पहली आहुति वही पहली बार का पार जाना है, और साध्य वे हैं जो उस द्वार पर पहले से खड़े हैं।
