So, steady and watchful, with single-minded devotion in serving the teacher, take the sharp axe of knowledge and cut through the jiva's hold on itself. Having reached the Self, then put the axe down.

Four words carry this. Guru-upasana is sitting near a teacher and serving him; upasana comes from a root meaning to sit close. Vidya is knowledge, from vid, to know, and Krishna calls it an axe. Jiva-ashaya is the place where the jiva, the embodied self, lies stored and attached: the habit of taking itself to be this body, this name, this story. Apramatta means not careless, awake. Krishna tells Uddhava the way out of the tree of worldly life he has just described. A steady person serves the teacher with one devotion, and the teacher's instruction sharpens knowledge until it can cut. What it cuts is the self's grip on its own false picture, not the world and not the body. The one who does this stays attentive throughout, because a blunt or careless swing cuts nothing. Once the Self is reached, Krishna adds a last instruction: lay the axe down. Knowledge is a tool for one task. Carried afterwards, it becomes one more thing to hold. The commentators read the axe as knowledge made keen by the teacher's words. Krishna is answering Uddhava's question about how a bound self becomes free. The verse asks Uddhava for steadiness, close attention, devotion to a teacher, and then for the courage to let go even of the knowing that freed him.

A man spends a long afternoon felling a dead tree that leans over his roof. When it is down, he does not carry the axe about the house. He sets it against the shed wall. The tree is the tangled self-image, the axe is knowledge, and the wall is where the freed person leaves it.

1. This evening, name one label you grip hard, such as the one who copes or the one who is always right. Write it on paper. 2. Ask an older or wiser person you trust how they let go of a label like that. Listen for ten minutes without arguing. 3. Next time the label is challenged, notice where it tightens, and stay awake to that for one breath. 4. At night, check whether your insight has become a new badge. Set that down too.

A woman who ran a school for thirty years sits at her kitchen table on her first weekday morning after retiring. A neighbour asks what she does, and she hears herself say, 'I'm the headmistress.' The title is gone, yet she still reaches for it. Krishna's teaching begins with the reaching. A sharp, patient look, ideally sharpened by someone who has walked the road, sees that the title was something she wore and not what she is. The hold loosens a little each time she catches it. The last instruction then matters. She need not replace 'headmistress' with 'one who has seen through titles' and carry that proudly. Knowledge did its work and can be set aside. Ordinary experience confirms the first part: people who tie their whole worth to one role are hit hardest when it ends. The verse does not promise that the morning will feel easy, or that grief for the old work will vanish. It does not replace a doctor or a counsellor if the low mood stays heavy for weeks. It describes a way of looking, offered by Krishna as his teaching, not a cure for sorrow.
