Know both states, then settle in the middle between them. Let go of both together, and in that middle reality shines out.

Two key words carry this. Bhava means a state or condition: a mood, a thought, a perception, anything that is present for a while. Madhya means the middle, the place between two such states. The verse takes two states, any pair, such as a feeling and its opposite, or one thought and the next. First you know both. Then you rest in the middle between them instead of in either one. Then you drop both at once, so the mind has no state to lean on. The word for that is tattva, the real, what is actually there. It shows itself in the middle. The logic is that the middle is not somewhere else. It is already in every ordinary moment, because every state ends in a gap before the next begins. Nothing needs to be built or reached. The moment you are in is opened from inside, and what was hidden behind the states is found in the space they leave. Letting go of only one state would just leave the other. That is why both are released together.

1. Sit comfortably and let your attention settle on whatever is happening, a thought, a feeling, a sound. 2. When it changes into something else, notice both: the one that was and the one that is. 3. Rest in the gap between them. Do not hold either one. 4. Let both go together, without choosing which to keep. 5. When the mind grabs a new state, notice it, and look for the middle again. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished.

The tradition's account is that the mind lives by moving from one state to another. When it rests in the middle and releases both, that movement stops, the support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is what the text calls reality shining. A sitter usually notices something plainer. At first the middle is hard to find, because attention jumps to the next state before the last one has finished. Often it is just a brief gap, a half-second of nothing in particular. Small signs it is working are a short stillness, a sense of the mind not reaching for anything, and a quiet that does not belong to either state. The usual mistakes are these. The middle gets turned into a third state to hold onto. A blank, dull mind gets taken for it. Or one side gets dropped and the other kept, which only swaps one state for the other.
