Meaning · English
When a state is let go, and awareness is held still and does not move on to another state, then through the state at the centre of that, contemplation opens like a flower.
Three words carry it. Bhava is a state: a thought, a sensation, an object held in mind. Cit is awareness, the knowing itself. Bhavana is contemplation, the settled attending the text uses for practice, and the verse adds a prefix that makes it contemplation beyond its usual size. The plain sense, clause by clause. A state is given up. Awareness, now stilled, does not travel to another state. Then, through the state that lies at the centre of that, the large contemplation blossoms. Ordinarily one state ends and the next is already moving in, so the join between them is never seen. Here the join is left standing, because awareness is not allowed to hurry across it. The doorway is the most common moment there is, a thing ending, which happens all day without notice. The text's logic is that nothing needs to be added. Awareness was present in every state that came and went. When it has no next place to go, what remains is awareness itself, and contemplation opens from there.
1. Sit comfortably, eyes open or closed, with nothing you need to do for a while. 2. Let a thought or a sensation be present, whichever is already there. 3. Let it go without choosing anything to replace it. Do not push it away. 4. When the next thing comes in, notice it and let that go too. Stay with the gap between, awake. 5. If you drift into fog, or keep following each new thought, return to the dropped state and the waiting after it. 6. Stop when the sit is over. Do not hold on to what you found.
The tradition's account: the mind lives by moving from one support to the next. Drop a support and do not supply another, and the movement stops. Awareness is then left knowing itself, which is what the text calls contemplation opening. What a sitter tends to notice is less tidy. The first difficulty is that a new thought arrives almost at once, and it feels like the old one never left. Attention keeps reaching for the next object, and the reaching itself becomes the thing to watch. A small sign it is working is a short stretch where nothing is being held, yet you are plainly awake, not dull. It often lasts a moment and then a thought fills it. The usual ways it goes wrong: pushing the thought away by force, which is only another act of holding. Or drifting into a blank, sleepy fog and calling it stillness. The difference is that the gap is alert.
