Awareness at a Pinprick
Vijnana Bhairava 93

Meaning · English
First prick some part of the body with a sharp needle or something like it. Then join awareness right there, at that spot. For one who does this, the way into Bhairava is stainless.
Three words carry the verse. Cetana is awareness, the plain act of being conscious of something, from the root cit, to perceive. Yuktva means joining or yoking: awareness is not sent off to look at the spot but fastened to it. Nirmala is made of nir, without, and mala, stain or dirt. The way is called stainless because nothing has to be added to it or cleaned up first. Now the clauses. Some part of the body is pricked at first, with a sharp needle or something like one. The choice of spot is left open. Then awareness is joined right there, in the place the prick landed and nowhere else. The last clause says that for this, the going into Bhairava, the Lord's own nature, is stainless. Why it works as a doorway follows from the text's own logic. A sharp sensation is already in the ordinary moment, and it cuts through the usual scatter of thoughts without effort. Nothing has to be built or imagined. The awareness that was going to be pulled toward the sting is gathered into one point instead of lost in it, and that gathering is the opening.
1. Sit or stand comfortably and quietly, with a clean, sharp point ready, such as a needle. 2. Touch some part of the body with it, lightly, enough to feel a prick and no more. Never make a wound. 3. Put the point away and bring all your awareness to the spot that was touched. 4. Stay with the bare sensation. When the mind starts to comment or drift, bring it back to the same spot. 5. When the sensation fades, rest in whatever awareness is left for a few breaths, then stop.
The tradition's account is that the mind runs by moving from one thing to the next. A sudden sharp sensation stops that movement, and when awareness is joined to the spot instead of recoiling, the support the mind usually leans on, its stories about the sensation, drops away. What remains is awareness itself, with the sting as the only thing it touches. The text calls that way into Bhairava stainless. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The prick takes all attention for a moment. Then the mind starts to comment: it hurts, how long, is this right. That commentary is the usual place it goes wrong, and so is flinching away or trying to make the sensation larger. A small sign it is working is that the sensation shrinks to a bare point without a name, and the thinking about it goes quiet for a few breaths. Then the sensation fades and attention wanders. That is ordinary, and the next step is simply to return to the spot.
