The Middle Between Two Pulls
Vijnana Bhairava 103
Meaning · English
Do not throw the mind into pain, and do not throw it into pleasure. Bhairavi, look into the middle between them: what remains there?
Bhairava names two places the mind usually goes: duhkha, pain, and sukha, pleasure. Nikshipet means to throw or set something down. The mind is flung at what hurts and flung at what delights, and each time it leaves itself behind. The verse asks that it not be thrown into either one. Then comes madhya, the middle, the gap between the two pulls. Tattva means that-ness, what a thing is in itself. Avashishyate means what is left over once the rest is subtracted. So the question is concrete: when the mind is not hurled toward pain or toward pleasure, and you look at the middle, what is still there? Bhairava does not answer. He asks Bhairavi to look, using the word jnayatam, let it be known. It works as a doorway because the middle is not somewhere else. Every ordinary moment of feeling already has this gap in it, before the mind grabs one side. Opening the moment from inside means noticing what remains when the grabbing is absent. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, since it is not available to us.
1. Sit comfortably, or stay wherever you are, and let the body settle. 2. Notice what is strongest right now: an ache, a worry, a pleasant thought, a taste of ease. 3. Do not follow it and do not push it off. Let the mind stay where it is instead of being thrown. 4. Look at the gap between this feeling and the next one that comes, and ask what is left there. 5. When the mind lunges toward one side, see the lunge, and look into the middle again. 6. Stop when you like, without judging the sit.
The tradition's account: the mind's movement is what carries it out to pain and pleasure. When the movement is not made, the support that held attention to an object falls away, and what remains is awareness knowing itself. The text calls that what is left over. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. First, the pull is quick. A sore knee or a pleasant memory has already taken the mind before you see it go. Then the difficulty is that the middle looks like nothing, a blank or a dullness, and the mind rushes to fill it. A small sign of it working is a moment when the feeling is still present but attention is not leaning on it. The body may feel the ache or the ease without the story around it. Usual ways it goes wrong: pushing feeling away and calling that the middle, going numb, or hunting for a special state. Suppression feels tight and effortful. The middle, when it shows, is unforced.
