Mind without support
Vijnana Bhairava 108
Meaning · English
Make the mind without support, then do not think in thoughts. Then, in the self's own being as the highest Self, you are Bhairava, O deer-eyed one.
Three ideas carry the verse. Nirādhāra means without a base: the mind is not resting on any object, image, plan or story. Vikalpa is a thought that divides, one that cuts the field into this and that, me and it, wanted and unwanted. Bhairava is the name for the state the whole text points to, the awake, free nature that was never absent. The first clause asks you to take away the mind's support. The second asks you not to build thoughts out of thoughts: when one arises, you do not continue it into a chain. The last clause gives the result in the text's own terms: when the individual self stands as the highest Self, that is Bhairava. Nothing new is added; the support was the only thing in the way. This works as a doorway because the ordinary moment already has a gap in it, the instant before the next thought catches hold. Bhairava's answer is to open that gap from inside, not to go somewhere else. Shivopadhyaya's reading is not quoted here, since his words are not in front of me.
1. Sit comfortably, spine easy, eyes soft or closed, and let the body settle. 2. Do not pick an object. Let the mind rest on nothing in particular. 3. When a thought rises, do not follow it and do not push it away. Let it end without adding a second thought to it. 4. When you catch yourself holding on to something, including the effort itself, let go of that too. 5. Stay in the gap between thoughts as long as it lasts, then return to step 2. 6. Stop when the timer ends, and sit a moment before moving.
The tradition's account: the mind moves by leaning on something, an object, a memory, an idea. Remove the lean and the movement stops. Thought no longer multiplies into more thought, and what is left is awareness knowing itself, which the text calls the nature of Bhairava. Nothing is produced. It is uncovered. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. The first difficulty is that trying to have no support becomes a support: you grip at emptiness, or watch yourself for success. Attention keeps looking for something to hold, and the thoughts come back dressed as effort. A small sign it is working is a short gap where a thought ends and no new one has started, and you are still plainly there, awake. The usual ways it goes wrong are dullness, where the mind simply goes blank and foggy, and forcing, where the jaw, brow and breath tighten. Neither is the verse. The gap is brief at first and is noticed afterward as much as during.
