When Support Gives Out
Vijnana Bhairava 112
Meaning · English
Whether resting on the supports, or through plain inability, or through not knowing, or as the mind dissolves: when the shaking of entering the risen power comes to its end, Bhairava's own form is there.
Four doors are named, and they lead to one room. The first is the adhara, a support: a place the attention rests, such as a point in the body or a shape. The second is inability, where you simply cannot go on. The third is not knowing, where you have lost the thread and no longer know what you are doing. The fourth is the mind dissolving, where thought loosens and goes slack. Each is a way the ordinary grip fails. Then comes shakti, the power that has risen, and samavesha, entering into it. Entering is not smooth. It brings kshobha, a shaking or agitation. The verse is about the end of that shaking. When it ends, what is there is the form of Bhairava, which is the speaker's own nature. By the text's logic nothing new is brought in. The ordinary moment is opened from inside: a held point, a failure, a blank, or a loosening is where the grip lets go. What was behind the grip needed no making. It shows once the stirring settles.
1. Sit down and choose one support, such as a point in the body or a shape in the mind. Rest your attention on it. 2. When the hold weakens, through tiredness, losing the thread, or thoughts going slack, do not repair it. 3. Let the support go. Stay where you are, without picking up another. 4. If a shaking or restlessness comes, let it run without following it. 5. Wait for the shaking to come to its end, and stay with what is there. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished, and get up slowly.
The tradition's account runs like this. The mind moves by leaning on something, and each of the four doors removes the lean. When the support drops away, the movement of mind stops. The power that was spent on holding rises and enters awareness, and it shakes. When the shaking ends, awareness is left knowing itself, which the text calls Bhairava's form. A sitter tends to notice something plainer. Resting on a support is the easy door, and the first difficulty is that attention keeps slipping off it. The slipping is not a mistake, because the failing is what the verse uses. Giving out can feel like boredom, fatigue, or a flat blank, and the usual error is to fight it or rescue it with a new thought. Some restlessness or a jolt may come as the lean is lost. Small signs of it working are a pause that stays open and a quiet that needs no holding. It goes wrong when the blank is mistaken for sleep, or when a result is chased.
