Eyes Held Open

Vijnana Bhairava 113

Meaning · English

This is the handed-down teaching, goddess; listen, and I will tell it rightly. Aloneness comes at once to the two eyes when they are made merely fixed, held without moving.

Three words carry it. Sampradaya is what is handed down from teacher to student, so Bhairava is passing on a practice that was given to him rather than offering an idea. Kaivalya comes from kevala, meaning only or alone. It names awareness left as itself, with nothing added and nothing leaning on it. Stabdha means made rigid or motionless, and matra means merely, nothing more. So the eyes are to be fixed, and only that. Read clause by clause: this is the received teaching; goddess, listen; I will say it correctly; aloneness arises at once; it arises for the two eyes; they have only been held still. Nothing else is asked for, no object and no effort beyond the holding. It works as a doorway because the eyes are ordinarily always moving, and the mind moves with them. Hold the eyes and the ordinary moment of looking is opened from inside, with nothing to follow. Bhairava says the result is sudden, not built up over time.

1. Sit with your spine upright and your face loose. Leave your eyes open. 2. Choose a spot in front of you and rest your gaze there. Keep both eyes on that one place. 3. Hold them fixed, and do nothing more. Add no thought about the spot and no effort to see harder. 4. When your face tightens or your gaze hardens, soften the brow and jaw, and keep the eyes where they were. 5. When your eyes wander off, bring them back to the same spot. 6. Stop when the holding turns to strain. Close your eyes briefly, then open them.

The tradition's account is that the mind's restlessness travels with the eyes. When the eyes stop, the mind's movement stops with them, nothing is left for attention to hold on to, and awareness remains knowing itself, alone. A sitter usually notices something plainer. The first difficulty is the urge to blink and shift the gaze, and the eyes may water or feel dry. The next is that fixing turns into straining: the brow tightens, the jaw sets, the stare hardens. That is a miss. The verse says merely fixed, so the holding has to be light enough that the face stays loose. A small sign it is working is that thoughts lose their pull for a moment, because looking has stopped hunting. Another is that the edges of what you see grow vague while the centre stays. Another usual miss is drifting into a daydream with the eyes pointed at nothing and the attention gone.
