Wherever the Mind Wanders

Vijnana Bhairava 116

Meaning · English

Wherever the mind goes, outside or within, right there is the state of Shiva. Since he pervades everything, where could the mind go to get away from him?

Three words carry it. Manas is the mind, the part that moves, reaches, and settles on things. Bahya and abhyantara are outside and inside: a tree, a sound, a memory, a feeling. Vyapaka means pervading, filling the whole space, with nothing left over. Shiva's avastha is the state or standing-place of Shiva, the ground Bhairava has been pointing to all along. Now the clauses in order. Wherever the mind goes, whether to something in the world or something in the head, that very place is Shiva's state. The reason follows: he pervades all of it, so the mind has nowhere else to go. Wandering is not a departure from him. Every stop on the trip is already inside what it was trying to reach. That is why an ordinary moment works as a doorway. Nothing has to be cleared away first. The distraction, the worry, the passing sight are not blocking the way; they are the ground itself, seen from inside. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the verse as saying that any object the mind rests on is no different from Shiva's own nature, so recognition can happen at any object.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are, eyes open or closed, and let the mind do what it does. 2. When it goes to something outside, a sound or a sight, notice where it has gone. 3. When it goes inside, to a memory or a worry, notice that place the same way. 4. Say to yourself that this spot is not away from Shiva, since he fills it. 5. When the mind moves again, follow it without pulling it back. Notice the next place. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished, or after the minutes you set.

The tradition's account: the mind moves by taking up one support after another, and each time it believes it has left its source. When the mind sees that every support is pervaded by Shiva, the sense of going away from him falls off. The movement has no distance left to cover, and awareness is left knowing itself in whatever it touches. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the mind keeps leaping, and you catch yourself having left the object a minute ago. The usual mistake is treating each catch as failure and dragging the mind back by force. That makes the wandering feel like an enemy, which is the opposite of the verse. A small sign it is working is a moment when the thought, sound, or worry is just there, and the effort to be somewhere else is absent. Another is noticing the place the mind has gone, instead of the story about it. It can also go flat: the idea of pervasion becomes a sentence repeated, with nothing looked at. Then return to the plain thing in front of you.
