Meaning · English

Through whichever door of the senses the awareness of the all-pervading one flashes forth, right there, because it has no nature but that, the mind dissolves into it and the self is found full.

Three words carry the verse. Akshamarga is the road of the senses: aksha is a sense organ, marga a road, so sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell are each a road. Vibhu is the one who pervades, who reaches everywhere and leaves nothing outside. Bharita means filled, so bharitatmata is the condition of the self being full. Now the clauses. Wherever, by whatever sense, awareness of the pervading one flashes out, that is the spot. It is not a special sight or a special sound. It is any ordinary seeing or hearing, at the instant its knowing shows. The next clause gives the reason: that flash has only this as its nature. Awareness is not a visitor inside the colour or the note. It is what the colour and the note are made of, as far as experience goes. So the mind, which was busy with the object, dissolves into it, and the self is left full, lacking nothing. This works as a doorway because nothing has to be added or removed. Bhairava's answer is that the ordinary moment, opened from inside, already holds what is sought. The sense-road is the way in because every moment of perceiving is already lit by awareness.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are, eyes open or closed, with nothing arranged. 2. Let one sense be loud for you now: a sound in the room, the light on a wall, the touch of cloth. 3. Notice the instant of knowing it, before you name it. Stay with that knowing, not the thing. 4. When a thought carries you off, take whichever sense is nearest and begin again from there. 5. Let the object go on as it is. Do not push it away or hold it. 6. Stop after about ten minutes, and keep the last sound or sight in view as you stand.

The tradition's account runs like this. The mind normally travels out along a sense toward its object and then on into naming and wanting. Because awareness pervades, the traveling was never needed. When the movement stops, the object stops serving as a support, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls the result fullness. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the attention keeps jumping from the sound to the idea about the sound. The difficulty is that the sense-contact is quick and the commentary is quicker. Small signs of it working are a moment where the object seems less far away, a hush around a sound, a brief sense that the knowing is the same wherever it lands. Sometimes there is only a slight loosening of effort. The usual ways it goes wrong are straining to hold the object, hunting for a special state, or deciding that one sense is the right one and the others are not. Dullness can pass for quiet. If the attention goes foggy, it was not this.
