Wherever the Mind Goes

Vijnana Bhairava 129

Meaning · English

Wherever the mind goes, right there, in that very moment, let it drop that place and not settle anywhere. From there it would become free of waves.

Three words carry the verse. Mana is the mind, the part that goes out toward things. Yatra yatra means wherever, said twice, so no place is left out: a sound, a worry, a face, a plan. Nistaranga means without waves; taranga is a wave, and the mind is pictured as water that is stirred. Now the clauses in order. The mind goes somewhere. That is simply what it does, and the verse does not ask it to stop going. At that very moment, the going itself is the occasion. You let go of the place it has reached, and you do not set it down on anything else, which is what anavasthiti, not-standing-anywhere, means. Then the mind becomes waveless. The logic is that waves need something to rise on. A thought stays alive by landing on an object and being fed by it. When the mind arrives and finds nothing to rest on, the movement has nowhere to continue. So the ordinary wandering, the very thing that seemed to be the obstacle, is the doorway: the moment is opened from inside, with no need to go somewhere calmer first. Shivopadhyaya's commentary takes this as releasing the mind from each object it reaches, one after another.

1. Sit however you are comfortable, eyes open or closed, and let the mind do what it does. 2. Watch for the moment it arrives somewhere: a sound, a memory, a plan. 3. At that very moment, leave the place. Do not push it away and do not choose another. 4. When it goes somewhere new, do the same again, without comment. 5. When you find you have been standing in a thought for some time, leave it as soon as you notice. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished, or after about ten minutes.

In the tradition's own account, the mind is movement. Each object it lands on gives it support, and the support keeps the movement going. When the support is dropped at the instant of arriving, the movement stops, and what is left is awareness knowing itself, with no wave in it. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. At first the mind seems to go everywhere and you catch it late, well after it has landed. Catching it late is normal. The first small sign is a short gap between one thought and the next, brief and a little surprising. Attention may feel loose, as if it has no handle to hold. The usual mistakes are two. One is pushing the thought away, which only makes a second thought about the first. The other is swapping the place for a new one, such as a blank or a stillness you try to hold. That is settling again. The body can stay relaxed and ordinary through all of this. The work is in how attention leaves, not in any posture.
