Four Questions About Existence

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.1

Meaning · English

Teachers of Brahman ask: Is Brahman the cause? Where were we born from, what keeps us alive, where do we rest? Who directs us through joy and sorrow?

A group of people who talk seriously about Brahman, their word for whatever lies beneath everything, set out their questions plainly. They ask four things about human life. Where did we come from? What holds us up while we are alive? Where do we finally come to rest? And who or what steers us, since we find ourselves moved into good times and hard times without choosing them? The last question matters most. It assumes something is in charge, and that it is not us.

Picture waking on a night bus with no memory of boarding. The driver's seat is out of view. Some stretches are smooth, others jolt hard. You want to know where you got on, what keeps it moving, where it stops, and who is driving. The seekers ask those same four things about being alive.
