Weighing the Candidate Causes

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.2

Meaning · English

Time, nature, fixed law, chance, elements, womb, person: are these the cause? Not their mixture, since a self exists; yet the self, subject to pleasure and pain, is powerless.

The seer lists the answers people of his day gave for where the world comes from. Time. Inborn nature, the way fire is simply hot. Fixed law, a set order that must play out. Chance. The physical elements. A mother's womb. A person, the individual self. Combining them does not settle the matter either, because a living self is there, and a pile of factors does not account for it. That self cannot be the cause, because it has no control over its own pleasure and pain.

Picture a truck dumping bricks, sand, cement and timber on an empty lot. Everything a house needs is there, yet left alone the pile just sits for years. The listed causes are like that load. They are real and play a part, but heaping them together does not explain what does the building.
