A Wheel Counted Part by Part

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.4

Meaning · English

We see him as a wheel: one rim, three bands, sixteen tips, fifty spokes, twenty braces, six groups of eight, a many-formed rope, three paths, a confusion with two causes.

The One the seers saw in meditation is now described as a wheel, and described by counting. One rim holds it together. It is wrapped three times, ends in sixteen pieces, and turns on fifty spokes with twenty supports between them. Six groups of eight fill it out. A single rope, taking every shape, ties it all. Three paths run through it, and one confusion, arising from two causes, belongs to it. The text gives the numbers and leaves them unexplained.

Open a flat-pack furniture box and read the parts sheet: one frame, four legs, sixteen screws, two hinges. A heap of loose pieces becomes, on paper, a single object with a design. The counting works the same way. Listing every part turns a scattered world into one built thing, made to a plan.
