A River of Fives

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.5

Meaning · English

We study it as a river: five streams, five harsh twisting sources, breaths for waves, perception at its root, five eddies, five sorrows in flood, fifty divisions, five sections.

The whole that was pictured as a wheel a moment ago is now pictured as a river, and again every part is counted. The streams are usually read as the five senses. The waves are the life-breath, which works in the body as five separate breaths. At the root sits the mind's power to perceive. Five kinds of sorrow run through it as one rushing flood. Its harsh, twisting course is the shape of life as it is lived: fast, winding, and hard to stand still in.

Picture a stadium emptying after a match. People pour out through several gates at once, the lines merge on the stairs, and knots of swirling bodies form at each doorway. Nobody chose this direction; the push of the crowd decides it. Senses, breath and sorrow make that same push, carrying a person along before any choice is made.
