The Swan That Wanders
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.6
Meaning · English
In Brahman's vast wheel, which gives life to all and holds all, the swan wanders, thinking itself apart from the one who drives it. Embraced by him, it becomes deathless.
The wheel is the whole working world. Every living thing draws its life from it and rests inside it. The swan is the individual self, a bird that never settles for long and is carried round and round. It keeps circling because it takes itself and the one who sets the wheel turning to be two separate things. The release comes from the other side. When the mover welcomes the self, it reaches deathlessness, and the circling ends.
Picture a small child lost at a busy fair, running from stall to stall, sure the parent is somewhere far away. The parent has been nearby the whole time. The running stops only when familiar arms lift the child up. The running is the self that feels cut off. The lifting is being welcomed by the one it thought was elsewhere.
