Dissolving Into the Source

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.7

Meaning · English

The hymns sing of this highest Brahman. Three rest within it, the firm ground, the undecaying. Knowing what lies inside, Brahman's knowers dissolve into it, devoted, freed from birth.

The sacred chants have one subject: Brahman, the highest reality. Three things rest inside it, and the text names them shortly after. Brahman is the firm footing that holds those three. It is also the undecaying, the part of things that never wears away. People who come to know what lies within Brahman stop standing apart from it. They sink into it and give themselves to it completely. The result named is freedom from the womb, meaning no further births.

A sugar cube dropped into warm tea keeps its edges for a moment. Then it softens and disappears, though every grain is still there, spread through the cup. The knowers are like that cube. Once they see what Brahman holds, they stop being a separate lump. Nothing is left over to be born again.
