Meaning · English
Without beginning and free of material qualities, this imperishable Supreme Soul, though it dwells in the body, Arjun, neither acts nor is tainted by what the body does.
Krishna gives three reasons the soul stays clean. Anadi means without beginning: an, not, and adi, start. Whatever has no start was not made by anything and cannot be unmade by it. Nirguna means free of gunas, the strands or qualities of material nature. Actions, moods and stains all belong to those strands, and the soul has none of them. Avyaya means imperishable: a, not, and vyaya, spending or wearing away. Nothing is used up in it. So although it lives in the body, Krishna says it does not act, and it is not lipyate, which comes from a root meaning to smear. Nothing sticks to it. Arjuna is about to fight, and Krishna has just said that nature does the acting. Here he adds that the one who dwells in the body is not marked by the deed. Shankara reads the soul and the Supreme as one, and its inaction as the plain result of having no qualities. Ramanuja reads it as the Supreme Self dwelling within every body, untouched by the faults of the beings it lives in. Madhva reads the Supreme as always distinct from individual souls, present in the body without being bound by its actions. All three keep the same clause: dwelling in the body, it neither acts nor is tainted.
A film shows a house burning, a flood, a storm at sea. The screen stays dry and cool, and it is not scorched or soaked. All of it plays across the screen, and none of it sticks. The soul is the screen in this picture. The body's actions are the film passing over it.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you did today that you regret or feel stained by. Write it in one plain sentence, such as 'I spoke sharply to my sister.' 2. Sit for two minutes and read the sentence slowly. Notice that it describes something the body, voice and mood did. 3. Then ask quietly: who is it that watched this happen? Stay with that question for a minute without answering it. 4. Notice whether the weight eases a little. Then decide what repair, if any, is still yours to make, and make it tomorrow.
A bus driver clips a parked car at a narrow turn. His hands shake. Neighbours come out shouting, and a voice in his head says, 'I am a careless man.' The verse gives him a different footing. Krishna teaches that the one who lives in the body is without beginning, without qualities, and not smeared by what the body does. So the driver can first say, 'The bus hit the car,' and leave the heavier sentence unsaid. Then he can do the ordinary things: stop, breathe, exchange details, apologise, and call the depot. His actions stay his to answer for. The verse is not an excuse. It only removes the extra layer of 'I am ruined' on top of the event. Ordinary experience agrees that shame loosens a little once we can describe what happened without condemning ourselves. The verse does not promise that the fine will vanish, that the neighbours will be kind, or that the shaking will stop at once. If it does not ease over days, or turns into constant dread, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to see.
