Subtle as Open Space
Bhagavad Gita 13.33
Meaning · English
As space, which reaches everywhere, is not contaminated because of its subtlety, so the soul, situated everywhere in the body, is not contaminated.
Three words carry it. Akasha is space, the emptiness in which everything sits. Saukshmya is subtlety, a fineness so great that nothing can get a grip on it. Upalipyate comes from a root meaning to smear or daub, so it says to be stained, coated, tainted. Krishna points to space. Smoke, mud and flame pass through it and none of it sticks. Space is in every room and every pot, and no room's dirt changes it. He says the soul is like this. It is present all through the body, yet what the body goes through does not coat it. The reason runs through the surrounding teaching: people take themselves to be the body and its fortunes, and so feel every stain as their own. Krishna answers by naming what lies beneath, the knower in the body, which hunger, pain, praise and blame do not reach. Shankara reads this as the self's complete non-attachment, every stain belonging to body and mind alone. Ramanuja reads it as the soul being distinct from the matter it lives in, so matter's faults do not become its own. Madhva reads the untouchedness as belonging most fully to the Supreme dwelling in the body.
A glass jar is dipped in mud, smeared with oil, then left full of smoke. The jar is filthy, but the air inside it is the same air it always was, and when the jar is rinsed, nothing in the air needs rinsing. The jar is the body and its troubles. The air is the soul.
1. Tonight, pick one thing that went badly today, such as a sharp word or a mistake. 2. Sit for two minutes and say its details plainly in your mind: what happened, what you felt, where in your body. 3. Then notice who is noticing. The one watching the feeling is not inside the feeling. 4. Stay with that noticing for a few breaths, then go on with your evening.
A tea seller at a roadside stall has just had a customer shout at her and fling a cup back across the counter, with a queue watching. Her face burns and her hands shake. Step by step, the verse changes what she does with that moment. First, she can name what is happening: heat in the face, a tight chest, a wish to shout back. Those belong to the body and its quick reactions. Second, she can notice that something in her sees all this happening, and that it is not itself red-faced or shaking. Krishna's teaching is that this witness is not smeared by the insult. Third, she can wipe the counter and serve the next customer without carrying the shout into every cup. Ordinary experience confirms the small part of this that anyone can check: a feeling named and watched tends to loosen its grip a little. The verse does not promise that the sting vanishes, that the anger will not come back, or that she owes nothing to the next customer. It also does not replace help for someone whose distress stays heavy for days.
