The Sun and the Soul

As the one sun lights up this whole world, so the knower of the field lights up the entire field, Bharata.
Two words carry the verse. Kshetra means field, a plot that is worked and lived on; here it is the body. Kshetri means the owner of the field, the one who dwells in it and knows it; here it is the soul. Prakashayati means to make shine, to bring into light. Krishna gives Arjuna a comparison from daily life. One sun, from one place, lights every corner of the world. In the same way the soul, single and unmoved, lights the whole body: its sensations, its moods, its thoughts. The body has no light of its own. It is felt and known only because something knows it. This answers the question the chapter has been building toward, which is how a body could be known as a field at all. Something other than the field must stand as its knower. The sun is also not changed by what it lights, which fits the earlier verses about the soul staying untainted. Krishna asks Arjuna to take in this plain fact about himself: he is the light in which his body and mind appear. As the commentators read it, Shankara takes the knower as the one Self whose awareness is the same in every body. Ramanuja takes it as each individual soul, whose knowing spreads through its own body as light spreads from the sun. Madhva stresses that the soul is distinct from the body and depends on the Lord for its light.
Morning sun comes through a kitchen window and lights the pots, the crumbs, the cracked cup, the sleeping cat. Every object shows up because of that light, and none of them is the light. The soul stands to the body as the sun stands to the kitchen: it is what lets everything be seen.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes before sleep and name three things in the body or mind that are present: an ache, a worry, a warm hand. 2. After each one, say silently, 'this is being known.' 3. Notice that the one who knows them stays steady while they change. 4. Tomorrow, when a sharp feeling comes, do the same for a few breaths before you answer anyone.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor while her mother is in surgery. Her feet hurt, her stomach is empty, and fear keeps replaying the worst outcome. All of it arrives as one heavy lump she calls 'I am falling apart.' The verse would change this in small steps. First she notices that the feet ache. Then that there is hunger. Then that there is fear, and that she can see it. Each of these is something known, and she is the one knowing. Ordinary experience bears this out: a feeling named from a small step back usually loosens its grip a little. Krishna teaches that this knower is the soul, which lights the body as the sun lights the world, and that it is not the body or the mood it lights. With that footing she can drink water, stretch her legs, and keep her fear company without being swallowed by it. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, that the fear will vanish, or that grief will be spared. It does not replace the surgeons, nor a doctor for her own exhaustion.
