Body and Its Knower

Bhagavad Gita 13.35

Meaning · English

Those who see, with the eyes of knowledge, the difference between the body and the knower of the body, and who know the release of living beings from material nature, approach the Supreme.

Krishna closes his teaching on the field and its knower with one claim: seeing a difference leads to the Supreme. Three terms carry it. Kshetra means field, here the body, the ground where experience grows. Kshetrajna means knower of the field, the one who stands inside the body and is aware of it. Antaram means the gap or difference between the two. Jnana-chakshusha means with the eye of knowledge. Krishna does not call this knowledge an opinion. He calls it a way of seeing, like sight, which has to be used. He adds a second thing to see: prakriti-moksha, release from material nature. Prakriti is the stuff of body and mind. Moksha is loosening, freedom. Those who see both the difference and the release, Krishna says, go to the Supreme. The reason sits in the verses before it: the knower is not stained by the body, and it lights up the whole body as the sun lights the world. If that is so, hardship in the body does not have to be taken as hardship of the knower. Shankara reads the knower as one with Brahman, so that seeing the difference clears away a mistaken identity. Ramanuja reads the soul as truly distinct from matter, released from it and then joined to the Lord in devotion. Madhva reads the differences between soul, matter and God as real, and the seeing as leading to the Supreme by his grace.

A man comes in from a storm wearing a heavy coat. The coat is soaked, muddy and torn at one sleeve. He feels the weight of it, then unbuttons it and hangs it on a hook. He is dry underneath. The coat is the body and its nature. The man is the knower, who can tell which is which once he looks.

1. Tonight, for five minutes before bed, sit and name what the body is doing: tired legs, a dull ache, a hungry stomach. 2. Say each one as a report, not a complaint: "the body is tired," not "I am ruined." 3. Then notice who is noticing. Stay with that for a minute. 4. Do the same tomorrow the next time you are annoyed or in pain, for one breath before you answer anyone.

A woman of sixty-eight sits on a hospital corridor bench, waiting for her scan results. Her knee throbs, her stomach is tight, and her mind has already run to the worst. She is saying, over and over, "I am falling apart." The verse gives her a different order of events. Krishna tells Arjuna that the knower of the body is different from the body. So she can notice the knee as a knee, and the tight stomach as the body's own alarm. She can notice the mind running ahead as another movement in the field. Someone is aware of all of it, and that awareness is not itself throbbing or tight. From there she can breathe, ask the nurse a plain question, and sit with her hands open. Ordinary experience agrees on a small point: when we describe a pain as an event, it often loosens its hold on our choices, even though it still hurts. The verse does not promise the scan will be clear, or that pain, fear or grief will stop. It does not replace the doctor she is waiting to see. It names what Krishna calls the way of seeing that leads onward.
