Meaning · English

The Blessed Lord said: Once more I will declare the supreme wisdom, the best of all knowledge, by knowing which all the sages have attained the highest perfection through this.

Three words carry this opening. Jnana comes from a root meaning to know, and it means knowing that changes the knower, not information collected. Muni means a sage, someone given to reflection and silence. Siddhi means success, a thing brought to completion, and here it is the highest completion a person can reach. Krishna says he will speak again, because he has already been teaching Arjuna, and that what follows is the best of all knowledge. His reason is in the last line: the sages who knew it all reached perfection by it. He offers it as a road already walked, with a record of arrivals. This verse only announces the teaching. The content comes in the verses after it. What Krishna asks of Arjuna here is attention, and the willingness to hear something a second time. The commentators read the subject differently. Shankara takes it as knowledge of the Self, set apart from matter, which leads to freedom. Ramanuja takes it as knowledge of how nature binds the soul, which opens the way to the Lord. Madhva takes it as knowledge of the Lord's supremacy, through which the sages reached their goal.

A footpath climbs a hillside, worn bare by years of boots, and at the trailhead a signpost says only that everyone who went up this way reached the top. The signpost is Krishna's promise, the worn track is the sages' record, and the hill is the perfection they reached.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down one thing you were taught long ago and keep forgetting, such as a kind of patience, a habit, or a piece of advice. 2. Read it aloud once, slowly, as if hearing it for the first time. 3. Tomorrow, when someone repeats an instruction to you, hear it out to the end without saying you already know. 4. Notice whether anything in it is new.

A grandmother stands beside her granddaughter at the stove on the third evening of roti lessons. The girl sighs and says, "You already told me." The grandmother says it again anyway, and says it is the best way she knows. Krishna does the same with Arjuna. He does not treat repetition as an insult to the listener. He says the teaching is worth a second telling and points to the sages who gained by it. In the kitchen, that changes the moment in steps. The girl is no longer being corrected, because she is being handed something valued. The grandmother is no longer nagging, because she is passing on what served her. The girl listens differently the third time, and ordinary experience confirms that a thing heard once often slips and only settles on return. The verse does not promise that one more hearing makes the rotis round, and it does not say perfection comes by repetition alone. Krishna's claim is about this particular teaching, and the verses after it carry the substance.
