Beyond Birth and Dissolution

Bhagavad Gita 14.2

Meaning · English

Those who take refuge in this wisdom and attain a nature like mine are not born again when creation begins, and are not troubled when dissolution comes.

Three words carry the verse. Jnana is wisdom, knowing as opposed to merely holding an opinion. Upashritya means taking refuge: the root sense is to sit close beside something and lean on it, the way a traveler leans on a wall in rain. Sadharmya joins sa, same, with dharma, nature, so it means sharing a nature. Krishna tells Arjuna that those who lean on this wisdom come to share his own nature. He then names two moments. Sarga is creation, when beings are sent forth. Pralaya is dissolution, when all is drawn back. Krishna says such people are not born again at the first and feel no misery at the second. The reason sits in the verses before and after: he has just promised the highest wisdom, and he is about to explain how all beings arise from prakriti. Birth and dissolution belong to that whole cycle, and those who have reached his nature stand outside its grief. What it asks of the listener is to treat this wisdom as a place to rest, not a fact to collect. Shankara reads sharing his nature as liberation, oneness with the Lord's own being. Ramanuja reads it as likeness to God, not identity, in freedom and bliss. Madhva also holds that the soul stays distinct, gaining a likeness in qualities.

A boat tied to a fixed pier rises and falls with every tide, yet the pier stays where it is. The wisdom is the pier. The cycle of creation and dissolution is the water, which still comes and goes, while the one who has taken refuge is no longer carried off by it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep and name one thing that changed today: a mood, a plan, a person's tone. 2. Ask which part of you watched that change happen. Notice that this watcher was there before and after it. 3. Next time something ends, a meal, a job, a day, pause for one breath and name what is still present. 4. Repeat this small practice for a week and notice whether endings sting a little less.

A man stands in a hospital corridor at night while his father's scan is read. Every few seconds his mind rushes forward to the funeral, the empty house, the changed family. His chest is tight and his breathing is shallow. The verse speaks to that rushing. Krishna teaches that refuge in wisdom, a steady knowing of what does not rise and fall, means a person is not shaken by the turning of creation and dissolution. In that corridor, the man might first feel his feet on the floor and name what is actually happening now: waiting, a worried heart, a father alive in the next room. Then he might ask what in him is aware of all this fear, and rest his attention there for a few breaths. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind pulled between past and future suffers more than a mind placed in the present moment. The verse does not promise that the scan will be clear, that grief will be absent, or that a doctor's care can be replaced by calm. It speaks of a steadiness beneath the loss, not a removal of it.
