Dull Fog of Ignorance
Bhagavad Gita 14.13
Meaning · English
Dimness of understanding, unwillingness to act, carelessness and bewilderment: these arise, Arjuna, joy of the Kurus, when the mode of ignorance grows strong.
Krishna gives Arjuna four marks of tamas, the mode of ignorance. Tamas comes from a root sense of darkness. Aprakasha is the lack of prakasha, light, so it means understanding gone dim. Apravritti is the lack of pravritti, movement toward action: inertia, not starting. Pramada is carelessness, letting slip what should be watched. Moha is delusion, taking one thing for another and feeling sure of it. Read together, the four make a person who cannot see clearly, will not begin, forgets what matters, and is wrong without knowing it. Krishna gives them because the previous verses described the marks of clarity and of restless striving. Here is the third condition, and it can be mistaken for rest or peace. Knowing the marks lets a person recognise which mode is strong in them at a given hour. Krishna says it at the start of a teaching on how these modes bind. Shankara glosses the first as lack of discernment and the third as inattention to what is to be done. Ramanuja takes the four as the counterpart to the marks of sattva, signs by which tamas is known. Madhva is likewise read as treating them as signs for telling which mode is at work.
Picture a room at noon with the curtains still drawn and the lamp off. A half-written letter lies on the table, last night's cups sit unwashed, and nobody can say when anyone last opened a window. That room is a mind under tamas: light is available, but nothing lets it in.
1. Tonight, note the hour you feel most sluggish or forgetful, and write it on a scrap of paper. 2. At that hour, ask once: is this dimness of sight, not starting, carelessness, or a wrong certainty? Name which one. 3. Do one small task you have been putting off, for five minutes only, with a window open or a short walk first. 4. Tomorrow, check whether naming it changed how heavy it felt.
A young father is awake at four in the morning with a newborn. He puts the bottle in the cupboard, leaves the stove lit, and tells himself the unpaid bill can wait forever. Krishna's four marks fit him closely: dim understanding, no will to start, carelessness, and a confident wrong idea. Seen through the verse, the moment changes in steps. First he names the state as the pull of tamas, not as a flaw of character. Then he does not trust what that state tells him, such as that nothing matters or that it is surely fine. Then he does the nearest small, necessary thing, like turning off the flame. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired mind is careless and sure of itself at once. The verse does not promise the exhaustion lifts, and it does not replace sleep, help at home, or a doctor if the heaviness lasts for weeks and does not lift even after rest.
