Signs of Restless Passion
Bhagavad Gita 14.12
Meaning · English
Greed, ceaseless activity, exertion in starting actions for their fruits, restlessness, and craving: these develop when the mode of passion predominates, Arjun, best of the Bharatas.
Krishna gives Arjuna a way to read himself. Three words carry it. Rajas is the mode of passion, from a root sense of colouring or heating: the force that stirs and pushes. Pravritti is activity, literally a moving forth. Spriha is craving, a reaching toward what is not yet in hand. Krishna says that when rajas grows strong, five things show up together: greed, a drive to be always doing, effort poured into starting actions for the sake of their results, an absence of rest, and wanting that keeps pointing at the next thing. His reason is practical. He has just said the three modes rise and fall in turn, so a person needs signs to tell which one is ruling today. The listener is asked to look at the motive behind the work, not the work itself. What he names is effort tied to results and unable to stop. Shankara reads the list as marks by which rajas is recognised in oneself. Ramanuja takes them as the way this mode binds the embodied self to outcomes. Madhva reads them as signs too, while holding that the modes work under God's rule.
A pot on a high flame rattles its lid, spits water over the rim, and never settles. The heat is not the fault. The rattling shows how hot it is. Greed, busyness and craving are the rattling: they show how strongly passion is burning in the person.
1. Pick one hour today, such as the evening, and keep a small tally on paper. 2. Each time you start something, put a mark under one of two heads: 'needed' or 'itching for a result'. 3. Each time you catch yourself wanting the next thing before this one is finished, note it too. 4. At night, read the marks without judging them. Notice which hour felt most restless, and just be aware of it.
A woman who bakes for a living stands in her kitchen at eleven at night. The second shop is nearly signed for. She is kneading tomorrow's dough while planning the menu, and she cannot say when she last sat down. Krishna's list lets her sort what is happening. The planning is activity. The sleeplessness, the sense that enough is never enough, and the pull toward the next thing are the signs he names for passion grown strong. Seeing that, she can ask whether tonight's work is needed or whether the wanting is driving it. She might finish the dough, put off the menu, and go to bed. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a tired, wound-up mind grabs at more and judges poorly. The verse does not promise that the shop will succeed, that the worry will go, or that rest will come at once. It does not replace a doctor when sleeplessness is lasting or frightening. It offers a way of naming what is moving her.
