Light at Every Door

Bhagavad Gita 14.11

Meaning · English

When light shines out through every gate of this body, and knowledge arises there, then know that goodness has grown strong and risen above the others.

Krishna gives Arjuna a sign to read, not a theory to hold. Three words carry it. Dvara means a gate, a doorway. Prakasha means light, the shining that lets things be seen. Jnana means knowing, clear understanding. The body, Krishna says, has gates, and the senses and mind are among them. When goodness, sattva, is strong, light comes through all of them, not one. Eyes see more clearly, ears hear more truly, and the mind understands without strain. That is the plain sense. The reason for it follows from the verses before. Krishna has just said that the three modes take turns winning, so a person needs a way to tell which one is in charge right now. This is the test for sattva: clarity everywhere, not a feeling of being special. The word vivriddha means grown strong, predominant. It does not say goodness is the only mode present, only that it leads. The commentators differ on emphasis. Shankara reads the gates as the senses and mind, lit by sattva. Ramanuja takes the knowledge as clear awareness of the self and what lies beyond the body. Madhva stresses that this clarity is a sign, not the final goal. What it asks of Arjuna is attention: to notice when the light is on, and when it is not.

A house on a bright morning, with every window and door open and sunlight crossing the rooms. You do not need a lamp in any of them. Goodness works like that: clarity is not in one lit room but in every opening of the body, and you see it by how well you can see.

1. Pick one time today, perhaps mid-morning, and stop for one minute. 2. Ask quietly: are my eyes, ears and thoughts clear, or is something fogged or hurried? 3. Name what you notice in a word or two, such as clear, restless or dull. Do not fix it. 4. Do the same at evening and compare the two words. Over a week, notice what came before your clearest moments: sleep, food, quiet, company.

A bus driver sits in the depot before her early shift, reading the road conditions on her phone. Some mornings everything feels sharp: she hears the engine, notices a child's wave, follows the route without effort. Other mornings she is tense, rushing, or numb, and small details slip by. Krishna's teaching gives her a way to read this. Clarity that reaches every sense and thought is the sign of sattva leading, so she can treat her state as information and not as a verdict on herself. Step by step, she notices which kind of morning it is, remembers that the modes take turns, and chooses her pace accordingly: more care when foggy, simple gratitude when clear. Ordinary experience agrees that rest, regular meals and a calm start make the senses and judgment work better. The old idea of three modes has no direct counterpart in medicine, and it is the text's own teaching. The limit is plain: noticing clarity does not cure exhaustion, illness or sorrow, and a person who is unwell still needs a doctor.
