Meaning · English
Passion and ignorance are overcome, and goodness rises, O Bharata. Passion rises when goodness and ignorance are overcome. Ignorance rises when goodness and passion are overcome in the same way.
Three words carry this. Sattva is goodness, the mode of clarity. Rajas is passion, the mode of drive and wanting. Tamas is ignorance, the mode of dullness. Abhibhuya means to prevail, to rise over something and press it down. Bhavati means becomes: a mode comes to be the one in charge. Krishna tells Arjuna that no one is made of a single mode. All three are present in everyone, always. At any moment one of them is on top, and it gets there by overpowering the other two. When goodness is on top, passion and ignorance are pressed down. When passion is on top, goodness and ignorance are pressed down. When ignorance is on top, the other two are pressed down. The reason follows from the verses before it. Krishna has just said how each mode binds the soul: goodness to happiness, passion to action, ignorance to negligence and sleep. If the modes are shifting, then so is the binding. A person is not fixed as calm, restless or dull. The mix moves from hour to hour. Krishna asks Arjuna to see this, and to see what is ruling him now. Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva each read the modes as belonging to material nature, not to the soul itself, though they differ on how that nature relates to God.
A tug-of-war with three teams on one rope, tied at the middle. Whoever pulls hardest drags the knot toward their side, but the other two teams never leave the field. They only lose ground for a while. The three modes work like this in one person: one team leads, two are held back, and the lead can change.
1. Pick three moments today: on waking, mid-afternoon, and before bed. 2. At each, spend one minute asking which is leading: clear and settled, restless and wanting, or heavy and foggy. 3. Write one word for each in your phone or on paper. Do not try to change anything. 4. By evening, look at the three words. Notice that the leader was not the same all day.
A shopkeeper opens his shutter the morning the rent is due. By ten he is pacing, checking the till every few minutes, snapping at his helper. By two, after a heavy lunch and no customers, he sits staring and cannot make himself add up the accounts. By evening, after a walk and a cup of tea, he can finally think and sees what to do. In Krishna's account, three different modes took the lead in him, each pressing the other two down. Seeing this changes the moment in steps. He can name the state he is in. He can know it will not last, because the leader changes. And he can hold off big decisions, such as a hard call to the landlord, until clarity leads. Ordinary experience agrees that mood, energy and judgment shift through a day, and that hunger, tiredness and worry colour what we decide. The verse does not promise that naming the mode will pay the rent or lift real worry. It gives him a truer picture of why he feels as he does.
