Three Different Pulls
Bhagavad Gita 14.9
Meaning · English
The mode of goodness binds one to happiness, and passion binds one toward actions, son of Bharat. Ignorance, indeed, clouds wisdom and binds one to delusion.
Krishna gives each of the three modes its own hook. The key words are worth taking apart. Sattva is the mode of goodness, from sat, what is. It is clarity and lightness. Rajas is passion, restless energy, a pull outward. Tamas is ignorance, the dark, heavy quality. The word for binds comes from a root meaning to cling or fasten. It does not mean to punish. It means to get stuck to something. Goodness fastens a person to happiness: the calm feels so good that one holds on to it. Passion fastens a person to action: one keeps doing, because doing feels like living. Ignorance works differently. It clouds wisdom, the ordinary knowing of what is right in front of you, and then fastens one to delusion, which here includes carelessness. Krishna is describing what holds an embodied person to the body and its moods. Even the best mode holds, and that is the point of naming it. A hook one cannot see cannot be loosened. Krishna asks Arjuna to recognise which pull is at work. Shankara reads the binding as a mistaken sense that happiness and action belong to the self. Ramanuja says the modes are qualities of nature that tie the embodied self to its body. Madhva stresses that the modes act under God's will.
Three travellers wait at one railway station. One sits on a pleasant bench in the sun and will not leave it. One paces and boards every train that arrives, whatever its destination. One sleeps with a hat over his face and misses the announcements. Each is held by something different. The bench is goodness, the pacing is passion, and the hat is ignorance.
1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes recalling your day in three parts: morning, afternoon, evening. 2. For each part, ask one question. Was I holding on to a pleasant feeling, pushing into busyness, or going dull and careless? 3. Name the pull in one plain word each: holding, rushing, or fog. Write the three words on paper. 4. Do this for one week, and notice which word comes up most. Change nothing yet. Only notice.
A retired bus conductor sits with his tea on the first morning after his last shift. For an hour he feels settled and does not want it to end. Then he gets up and starts rearranging the shelves, though nothing needs it. By afternoon he is dozing, and a small task he meant to do slips away. Krishna's three pulls fit that one day. Seeing them separately changes what he does next. He can enjoy the calm without clutching at it, ask whether the shelf-moving is need or restlessness, and treat the afternoon fog as a signal to stand up and walk. He no longer reads it as a verdict on himself. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness clouds judgment and that busyness can pass for purpose. The text itself says these three modes hold the embodied person, and that even happiness holds. The teaching does not promise that the man will feel content, and it does not lift grief or the loss of a working life. Persistent heaviness, poor sleep or low mood is a matter for a doctor, not for self-observation alone.
