Know that the mode of ignorance is born of ignorance and is the illusion of all embodied souls. It binds them, Arjun, through negligence, laziness and sleep.
Krishna names the third of the three modes of nature: tamas, the mode of ignorance. Three words carry the verse. Ajnana is not knowing, and Krishna says tamas is born of it, so the dullness and the not-knowing feed each other. Moha is illusion or bewilderment, a state where a person takes one thing for another and does not notice the mistake. Pramada is negligence, letting what matters slip by. Krishna tells Arjuna that this mode deludes every embodied soul, with no exceptions. It does not announce itself as a fault. It works through three ordinary things: negligence, laziness (alasya) and sleep (nidra). These are how it holds a person fast, the way a rope holds. The reason Krishna gives is the one he gives for each mode: each ties the soul to the body and its world in its own way. Sattva binds through happiness and knowledge, rajas through restless action, and tamas through a fog in which nothing is seen clearly and nothing is done. Shankara reads the verse as describing a loss of discernment, where one does not see what ought to be done. Ramanuja takes tamas as the opposite of clear knowledge, producing wrong understanding. Madhva reads it as a quality of matter that covers the soul's true knowledge. The listener is asked to recognise this mode by its marks.
Think of driving on a road in thick fog. The road is still there, and so is the turn, but nothing can be seen until it is passed. Tamas works like that fog: the truth of things stays where it was, and the dullness hides it.
1. Once today, when you feel heavy or put something off, stop and ask whether you are tired or only foggy. Give it one minute. 2. Pick one small task you have been neglecting, such as a letter, a call or a drawer. Do it for ten minutes, then stop. 3. Tonight, note whether the sleep you took was rest or an escape from something you did not want to face. 4. Tomorrow, rise at a fixed time and see how the morning feels.
On a Sunday afternoon a man lies on the sofa with the television on. A letter from the bank has sat unopened on the table for three days. He is not exactly tired. He has just kept not looking at it, and the not-looking has become a heaviness of its own. Krishna's teaching names this state and gives it three marks: negligence, laziness and sleep. With that naming, the man can ask a plainer question: is this rest, or is it the fog? Rest leaves a person lighter. The fog leaves him heavier and more behind. Seeing the difference, he can open the letter, do the one small thing, and then sleep if he is still tired. Ordinary experience bears out the link between a worn-out body and a clouded mind: poor sleep makes it harder to think clearly and to do what we know we should. The verse does not promise to lift grief, illness or deep exhaustion. Heaviness that lasts for weeks, or comes with low mood, is a matter for a doctor and not for willpower alone.
