Meaning · English
Know passion as the nature of craving, born from desire and attachment. It binds the embodied soul, son of Kunti, through attachment to action and its fruits.
Three words carry the verse. Rajas is the mode of passion, the pull toward doing, getting and reaching. Raga is colour, as dye stains cloth, and so it means a staining of the mind with liking. Trishna is thirst, the dry wanting for what one does not yet have. Sanga is sticking to something, attachment. Krishna tells Arjuna to recognise passion by its source: thirst joined to attachment. Out of those two it rises. Then comes the binding. Passion ties the embodied soul through karma-sanga, attachment to action and what action is expected to yield. The trouble Krishna names is not work. It is work done with a hook in it, where the mind is already living in the result. The reason he gives is the point of the whole chapter, which is to show how each mode holds a person, so that the holding can be seen. Shankara reads thirst as longing for what is not yet had, and attachment as clinging to what is had. Ramanuja reads it plainly: passion makes the soul cling to actions done for their results. The verse asks the listener to notice when wanting, not need, is driving the doing.
A treadmill. The belt runs, the display counts, the runner sweats, yet the room never changes. Action driven by craving is like that: plenty of motion, and the finish line always one step ahead, because the wanting sets the pace and not the road.
1. Pick one task today that you usually do with a result in mind, such as a message, a chore or a piece of work. 2. Before you start, spend ten seconds noticing what you are hoping to get from it. 3. Do the task, and each time your thoughts jump to the outcome, bring them back to the next small step. 4. At day's end, note whether the task felt lighter or heavier than usual.
A vegetable seller counts the day's takings at dusk. They fall short of the number she set herself, and before the coins are in the tin she is already planning how to push harder tomorrow. Her tiredness has little to do with the hours she stood. It comes from the gap between what is in her hand and what she wanted. Krishna's teaching would slow that moment. First she names what is happening: thirst for more, attached to the result. Then she separates the two things tangled together. The work of today is finished and was done well. The number is a wish. She can plan tomorrow's stall without carrying tonight's shortfall into it. Ordinary experience agrees that effort feels lighter when the mind is on the task and not on the tally. The verse does not promise that the rent will be paid, or that the number will be reached. It does not remove real worry about money, and a person in lasting distress needs practical help and, where it is called for, a doctor.
