Among these, goodness, being the purest, gives light and keeps one free from sickness. Yet it binds, sinless one, through attachment to happiness and attachment to knowledge.

Krishna has just named three strands of nature that bind the embodied soul. Now he takes the first and says the most favourable things about it. Sattva means goodness, clarity, a quality of being clear like clean water. Nirmala means without stain, and that is why sattva is called the purest. Prakashaka means that which lights things up: in a sattvic state the mind sees plainly. Anamaya means free from illness, a sense of wholeness and ease. Then comes the turn. Even this strand binds. Sanga means attachment, a clinging. Sattva ties a person through clinging to happiness and clinging to knowledge. The reason Krishna gives is the problem of the whole chapter: every strand of nature, including the best, belongs to the body and mind, not to the soul that lives in them. A person who feels calm and wise may begin to hold on to that feeling, to need it, and to take it as who they are. Arjuna is addressed as sinless, so he is being told this as someone fit to hear it. The listener is asked to see that the finest states are still states. They arrive and they leave. Among the classical commentators, Shankara reads the binding as the sense of 'I am the happy one, I am the knower' being laid over the soul. Ramanuja and Madhva also read it as real bondage that goodness brings, though each places it within his own account of the soul and God.

A window kept spotless lets in the most light, and the owner starts to sit beside it all day, unwilling to leave the bright spot. The clean glass is sattva, and the chair that keeps him there is the clinging to the comfort and the clear sight it gives.

1. Today, when you notice a good state, such as a calm hour, a clear thought or a pleasant sense of understanding, name it silently: 'this is clear, this is easy.' 2. Notice whether you want it to stay, or feel proud of it. Just notice, for about a minute. 3. Let the moment pass without chasing it back. Go on to the next task. 4. In the evening, recall one thing you understood today and ask whether you are holding it as yours or simply using it.

A retired teacher sits on her balcony after a good morning. She has slept well, her mind is clear, and she has just worked out a problem that bothered her for weeks. She feels light, and a thought arrives: let every day be like this. By afternoon a small worry returns and she feels cheated, even angry at herself, as though she has lost something she owned. Krishna's teaching changes the moment step by step. First, she sees the clear morning as a condition, helped by rest and quiet, and not as her possession. Second, she notices the wish for it to last is a separate thing from the clarity itself, and that the wish is what hurts when the worry comes. Third, she can take the worry as weather and carry on, using what she understood without needing to be the one who always understands. Ordinary experience agrees that the craving to keep a good mood often spoils it. The teaching does not promise that clear days will stay, that grief or illness will stay away, or that it can replace a doctor when low mood or exhaustion needs care.
