Three Strands That Bind

Bhagavad Gita 14.5

Meaning · English

Goodness, passion and ignorance: these three modes, born of material nature, bind the eternal embodied soul within the body, O mighty-armed one.

Three words carry the teaching. Guna means a strand, like one thread in a rope. Here it names the three qualities that make up material nature: sattva, goodness, which is clarity and calm; rajas, passion, which is restless drive; and tamas, ignorance, which is heaviness and fog. Nibadhnanti means they bind, from the root bandh, to tie. Dehin means the one who has a body, and avyaya means what does not wear away. Krishna tells Arjuna that body, senses and mind are all woven from these three strands, and that the strands tie the imperishable soul to the body it lives in. The reason comes from what he has just said: nature is the womb of all beings, so anyone born into it is shaped by what it is made of. The bondage is not a punishment from outside. It comes from the make-up of the body and mind the soul wears. What the teaching asks of Arjuna is to see the pull for what it is, a strand at work, and not to mistake it for the self. Shankara reads the binding as only apparent, since the self never truly changes. Ramanuja takes it as real, with the soul bound by a nature that belongs to God. Madhva holds that the soul is bound while staying distinct from nature and from God.

A kite flies on a string twisted from three threads. The kite is not the string, yet wherever the string tugs, the kite must go. The soul is the kite, the three modes are the threads, and the body and mind are the hand and wind that the tugging passes through.

1. Three times today, say mid-morning, mid-afternoon and bedtime, stop for ten seconds and ask: am I clear and calm, restless and wanting, or heavy and dull? 2. Pick one plain word for it and write it on a scrap of paper or in your phone notes. 3. Tonight, read the three words together and notice which one ran the day. Do not judge it. Just see it.

A taxi driver ends a fourteen-hour shift and has to decide whether to take one more fare. Part of him is heavy and wants to sleep. Part of him is restless and wants the extra money. Somewhere underneath is a quieter question: am I safe to drive? Krishna's teaching gives him three names for these pulls, and the first step is simply to notice which one is speaking. Naming the heaviness makes it one voice among others and not the whole of him. Naming the restlessness does the same. The clearer voice can then be heard and weighed. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness weakens restraint and that hurry narrows judgement. In the text's own terms, the soul is not the pull. It is the one who is being pulled. The limit is plain. Seeing the strands does not remove exhaustion, pay the rent or make a tired body safe at the wheel. Rest, food and a doctor, where needed, still do their own work.
