Meaning · English

Arjuna said: By what signs, my Lord, is one known who has gone beyond these three modes of nature? What is that person's conduct, and how does one cross beyond these three modes?

Arjuna asks the question, not Krishna, so what follows is his view of what he needs to know in that moment. He asks three things. First, linga, which means a mark or a sign, the way smoke is a sign of fire. He wants outward symptoms by which a person who has gone beyond the modes can be recognised. Second, achara, which means conduct, how such a person lives from hour to hour. Third, how: by what method does anyone actually cross. The word for crossing, ativartate, is built from ati, beyond, and vartate, to move or to stand. It means to stand beyond, or to pass over. Arjuna has just heard Krishna say that the three modes are what bind an embodied being, and that one who passes beyond them is freed from birth, death, old age and sorrow. A listener who hears that promise naturally asks what it looks like and how to reach it. Arjuna addresses Krishna as prabhu, master, and asks as a student who wants something he can check and follow. The classical commentators generally read the three questions as a set, and take Krishna's replies in the next verses as answering each in turn. Shankara reads them as asking for the marks of one who knows the Self. Ramanuja takes them as asking about the person devoted to the Lord. The question is asked in the singular about a person, not about a doctrine.

A traveller who has crossed a river is asked by those still on the bank how they might know someone has made it across, how that person walks afterwards, and where the ford is. Arjuna stands on the bank. The river is the three modes, the far side is freedom, and his three questions are the sign, the manner, and the crossing.

1. Tonight, pick one person you know whose calm you respect, someone who stays steady when others hurry or sulk. 2. For five minutes, write down what they actually do: how they speak when tired, how they react to praise and to a bad day. 3. Beside it, write one question you would ask them about how they got that way. 4. This week, ask them that question, and listen without arguing.

A nurse at the end of a double shift sits in the car park, too tired to start the engine. She wonders how her calmer colleague stays level when a ward turns chaotic, and what that colleague does differently. That is Arjuna's move: she asks for signs, for conduct, and for a method. Step by step, the questions change the moment. Looking for signs turns a vague envy into something she can watch, such as how her colleague speaks when rushed and when she rests. Asking about conduct moves attention from feelings to habits. Asking how brings it down to a first small step. Ordinary experience confirms that people learn steadiness more by watching someone steady than by hearing a rule. The verse offers no promise. Asking does not itself bring the calm, it does not lift the exhaustion in the car park, and where tiredness or low mood goes on for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see. Within the tradition, the answers come from Krishna in the following verses, not from Arjuna's asking.
