Meaning · English
Krishna says, Arjuna, the one beyond the modes does not hate illumination, activity or delusion when they are present, and does not long for them when they are gone.
Krishna is answering Arjuna's question about the signs of someone who has gone beyond the three modes. Three words carry it. Prakasha is illumination, a clear and bright mind. Pravritti is activity, the push to do and to get. Moha is delusion, a clouded mind that mistakes things. These are the marks of the three modes: sattva, rajas and tamas. The plain sense is that such a person does not push away any of the three when it arrives, and does not reach for it when it leaves. Clarity comes and goes. Busyness comes and goes. Confusion comes and goes. None of it is hated, none is longed for. Krishna gives this because the usual habit is to cling to the pleasant state and recoil from the unpleasant one, and that clinging and recoiling is what binds the embodied person. Even clarity can become something to crave. The verse asks the listener to watch the mind's weather without making an enemy of the storm or a prize of the sun. Shankara reads this as a description of the knower who sees the modes as separate from the self. Ramanuja reads it as the steadiness of a soul that knows it is distinct from matter. Madhva reads it as the mark of one who rests in the Lord and so is not shaken by the modes.
Think of a person sitting on a platform as trains pass. Express trains roar through, slow ones crawl, some arrive and some depart. The person neither curses the late train nor runs after the one that left. The platform is the steady self, and the trains are the passing states of clarity, restlessness and dullness.
1. Pick one hour today, such as the walk home or the washing up, and notice which state is present: bright, restless or foggy. 2. Name it quietly in one word, without scolding the foggy state or praising the bright one. 3. When the state changes, notice the moment you want the old one back. Just see the wanting for a few breaths. 4. At night, recall one state you disliked and ask whether it passed without your help.
A woman wakes at three in the afternoon of a hard week, sharp and focused at noon, now heavy-headed and muddled by a mistake she made in the morning. She wants the noon feeling back and is angry at the fog. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First she sees that the fog is a state, one that has arrived, as the clear state arrived earlier. Second, she stops adding a second struggle on top of the first, the anger at being foggy. Third, she does the next small task that suits the state, perhaps a simple chore, without demanding brilliance. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and stress cloud thinking and that fighting the cloud usually makes it feel worse. The verse does not promise that the fog lifts sooner, and it does not replace rest, food or a doctor when the heaviness is lasting or deep. The older terms, the three modes, have no exact modern match, so they are best held as the tradition's own way of naming clarity, drive and dullness.
