Seated Like a Witness

Bhagavad Gita 14.23

Meaning · English

Seated like one who looks on, he is not shaken by the modes. Knowing that only the modes are acting, he stays established in the self and does not waver.

Two words carry the verse. Udasina means one who sits apart, like a bystander at a game who does not join either team. Guna means a strand or mode of nature, and Krishna has spent the chapter naming three of them: clarity, restless activity and dullness. Avatishthati means to stay standing, to hold one's place. Krishna's answer to Arjuna's question about conduct is this: the person beyond the modes is not someone in whom the modes have gone quiet. Clarity, restlessness and heaviness still rise and fall in body and mind. What differs is where the person sits. They watch these movements as the work of nature, and they do not take each one as a verdict on who they are. So they are not pulled off balance, and they do not waver. The reason is the knowing itself. When a mood arrives and you see it as a mode acting, it has less to grab. Shankara reads the bystander as one who knows the self as separate from all doing. Ramanuja reads it as the soul seeing that nature, not the self, is the doer, while staying fixed in devotion to the Lord. Madhva stresses that this steadiness rests on the Lord's grace and on knowing the Lord as the real controller. The verse asks the listener to learn to sit apart from the weather of the mind.

A man sits on a riverbank at dusk and watches boats drift past, some loaded, some empty, some fast, some slow. He does not wade in or call out to any of them. The bank is the steady self, the boats are the modes passing by, and watching is not the same as being carried away.

1. Pick one mood that comes up today, such as irritation, restlessness or heaviness. When it arrives, say quietly to yourself: this is a mode acting. 2. Stay seated or standing where you are for one slow minute and watch it, without arguing with it or feeding it. 3. Notice whether it rises, peaks and fades by itself. Note the time it took. 4. Before acting on it, wait for that minute to pass, then choose what to do.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, her son in surgery. Panic rises, then a wave of numb tiredness, then a burst of urge to do something, anything. She grips her phone and almost sends an angry message to a relative who did not come. The verse, as Krishna gives it, would change the moment in steps. First she would name what is happening: panic, restlessness and heaviness are each arriving and leaving. Then she would let them be seen rather than obeyed. The angry message would not be sent in the grip of the surge. She would stay where she is, breathing, and let the urge crest. Ordinary experience confirms that a feeling named and watched often loses some of its force, and that a decision made after the peak is usually kinder than one made at it. The verse does not promise that her fear will vanish, that the surgery will go well, or that she will feel calm. It does not replace the surgeon, or a friend sitting beside her. It describes where she can stand while the fear is still there.
