Steady in Every Weather
Bhagavad Gita 14.24
Meaning · English
Alike in distress and happiness, established in the self, holding a clod, a stone and gold as equal; steady, the pleasant and the unpleasant of equal value to them, and blame and praise the same.
Three words carry the teaching. Sama means even, level, the same on both sides. It is repeated here, and tulya, which means of equal weight, as if on one scale. Sva-stha is sva, one's own self, and stha, standing: someone who stands in the self and not in what happens around it. Dhira is steady, a person who is pushed and does not topple. Krishna lists pairs: distress and happiness, a lump of earth, a stone and gold, the pleasant and the unpleasant, blame and praise. He says the one who has risen past the three modes meets each pair evenly. The reason sits just before, where Krishna says such a person knows the modes are what act and stays unmoved. Evenness is not numbness. It comes from standing somewhere that praise and loss do not reach. So the text asks the listener to find that standing place, not to suppress feeling. Shankara reads the list as the marks by which a knower of the self is recognised. Ramanuja reads the evenness as coming from seeing the self as distinct from matter, whose pairs come and go. Madhva ties the steadiness to resting in knowledge of the Lord.
A banyan tree in a storm. Leaves thrash, small twigs snap, and the trunk stays where it is, because the roots go deep. Praise and blame, gain and loss are the wind. The self is the root. The steady person still feels the wind but is not uprooted by it.
1. Today, when someone praises or criticises you, wait three slow breaths before you answer. Notice where it lands in your body. 2. At night, write two lines: one pleasant thing and one unpleasant thing from the day. Next to each, note how long it gripped you. 3. Once this week, pick something you prize and something you consider worthless. Hold each for a minute and notice how quickly you rank them.
A woman who runs a small tiffin kitchen closes up at night and reads two reviews on her phone. One calls her food stale and her prices a cheat. The other calls her the best cook in the neighbourhood. Her chest tightens at the first and her face warms at the second, and by the time she locks the door she has decided the day was bad, then good, then bad again. Krishna's teaching works in that moment in steps. She notices the tightness and the warmth as things that arrive. She sees that the cook who stirred the pot this morning is the same one standing at the door now, whatever the reviews say. She reads the criticism for anything useful, such as the price, and lets the rest go. The praise she takes without building her day on it. Ordinary experience agrees that a harsh word is felt in the body at once and that it fades faster when not fed. The teaching does not promise that the sting never comes, that a real wrong goes unanswered, or that grief can be reasoned away.
