Honor, Insult, and Letting Go

Bhagavad Gita 14.25

Meaning · English

Those who stay equal in honor and dishonor, equal toward the side of friends and the side of foes, and who renounce all enterprises, are said to have risen above the three modes of material nature.

Three ideas carry this. Tulya means level, the same on both sides of a scale. Krishna says it twice, once for honor against dishonor and once for the friendly party against the hostile one. The one he describes is not cold. Praise and insult, allies and enemies, simply do not tip the scale. Then comes parityagi, a renouncer, from tyaga, giving up, with the prefix pari meaning completely. What is given up is arambha, a starting or undertaking: the schemes begun out of craving or the wish to be seen. Last, guna means a strand or mode, one of the three forces Krishna has been describing in this chapter. Beyond them is what guna-atita names. The reason follows from the chapter. Honor and insult, friends and foes, and restless projects all come from the modes pulling at the mind. Whoever stops being pulled stops being ruled by them. Krishna offers this as a sign of freedom, not a rule to perform. The commentators differ on the renunciation. Shankara takes it as the knower of the self seeing that no action belongs to the self. Ramanuja takes it as giving up undertakings driven by desire while duty carries on. Madhva ties this freedom to devotion and God's grace.

A worn stone step sits at a front door. Some people cross it gently and some stamp over it in anger. The step gives no better welcome to the kind and no worse one to the rude. It carries all of them and keeps no ledger. The step is the mind that treats honor and insult alike.

1. Tonight, recall one compliment and one criticism from this week. Note which stayed with you longer. 2. Tomorrow, when someone praises or slights you, wait three slow breaths before replying. Notice only whether your mood tilted. 3. Pick one plan you started mainly to be noticed. Write down, in one line, whether you would still do it if no one ever knew. 4. Speak to someone you find difficult in the same tone you use with a friend, for one conversation.

A man is called to the front at his retirement party. Warm words fill the hall. In the first row sits the colleague who once took credit for his work, clapping with everyone else. The man feels two pulls at once: to glow in the praise, and to stiffen at the sight of the rival. The verse changes this moment in small steps. He notices the glow and does not cling to it, so the praise is received rather than chased. He notices the stiffness and does not feed it, so the rival becomes one more person in the room. His thanks come out the same toward both. The wish to prove something with one last speech falls away, and he says what is true and sits down. Ordinary experience confirms that approval and resentment steer us more than we admit, especially when we are tired or tender. The verse does not promise that the old injury stops hurting or that the colleague will apologize. It describes a person whose balance does not depend on either.
