Service That Never Wavers
Bhagavad Gita 14.26
Meaning · English
Whoever serves me with devotion that never strays, rising above these three modes of nature, comes to the level of Brahman.
Three terms carry the verse. Avyabhichara means unalloyed, not straying: the word is used for a faithfulness that does not wander to other loyalties. Bhakti-yoga is union through devotion, bhakti coming from a root meaning to share in, to belong to. Guna means a strand or mode; the three modes are the strands of nature that bind the mind with calm, restlessness or dullness. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person who serves him through steady devotion, not on and off, rises above all three modes and becomes fit for the level of Brahman. The reason follows from the verses before it. Krishna has just described the person beyond the modes as even in pleasure and pain, praise and blame. Arjuna's natural question is how anyone gets there. This is the answer: not by forcing the mind flat, but by giving it one steady object of love and service. The verse asks for constancy, a devotion that is the same on good days and bad ones. Shankara reads the verse as devotion leading to knowledge of Brahman, the formless reality. Ramanuja reads Brahman-level as the soul's own pure nature, living in service to God. Madhva holds that the devotee becomes fit for Brahman's company while remaining distinct from him.
A boat tied to a fixed post in a river rides every surge and drop of water, yet stays where it is. The river is the three modes, always rising and falling. The post is the one steady devotion that keeps the mind from being carried off.
1. Choose one small act of service you can offer daily, such as watering a plant, feeding a bird or calling an elderly relative, and offer it to God as you understand God. 2. Do it at the same time each day for seven days, even when you are tired or busy. 3. Notice on which days your mood is high and on which it is low. See whether the act stays the same on both.
A night-shift pharmacist, worn out, is handed a rude complaint at 3 a.m. Her mood swings: irritation first, then a heavy wish to quit, then a flash of pride when she answers sharply. The verse speaks to her at that moment. Krishna's teaching is that one steady object of devotion gives the mind something to return to, whatever the mood of the hour. Step by step, she would first notice the swing, irritation, flatness or pride, as weather passing and not as herself. Then she would do the next task as a small service offered to Krishna, such as counting the tablets carefully, instead of as a reply to the complaint. Ordinary experience confirms that a person with a fixed purpose is less tossed by passing moods than one who follows each feeling. The verse does not promise she will stop feeling tired or hurt, or that the night will be easy. It does not replace sleep, rest or medical care when she needs them. It offers a steady point to serve from while the moods come and go.
