The Ground Beneath Brahman
Bhagavad Gita 14.27
Meaning · English
For I am the basis of Brahman, the immortal and imperishable, of the eternal dharma, and of bliss that has no end.
Three words carry the verse. Pratishtha is a standing place, a foundation: the thing a structure stands on. Brahman is the vast, limitless reality the previous verse promised to the one who serves Krishna without wavering. Dharma is the order that holds things up, what sustains the world and a life. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the footing under all of it. He names four things that rest on him: Brahman, the immortal, the imperishable, and the eternal dharma. He adds a fifth, bliss that is aikantika, meaning it has one end only and never turns into its opposite. Ordinary pleasure ends in tiredness or loss. This bliss does not. The reason follows from the verse before it. Krishna has just said that devotion lifts a person to the level of Brahman. Here he says what that level stands on, so the one who reaches it is not left holding something that hangs in air. The commentators part ways. Shankara reads Krishna as the Supreme Self, one with Brahman, so the verse names a single reality. Ramanuja reads Brahman as the freed individual self, whose support is Krishna. Madhva holds that Krishna, as Vishnu, is distinct from and above Brahman, and is the support of all.
A tall house looks like walls and a roof, but the slab of stone under it carries all of it, and no one sees that slab once the house is built. Brahman, dharma and unending bliss are the rooms. Krishna says he is the stone they sit on.
1. Tonight, take a page and draw a line down the middle. On the left, list what you leaned on today: a mood, a compliment, a plan, a deadline. 2. On the right, write anything that stayed the same all day, however small. 3. Sit quietly for two minutes and say Krishna's name slowly, once or twice, or simply rest in the quiet. Notice whether your breathing slows. 4. Repeat at the same hour for a week and see which column grows.
A mother sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while her son is in surgery. Every minute the news might change, and her mind runs from one worst case to the next. Everything she is leaning on, the doctor's face, the clock, her own hope, shifts under her. Krishna's words point her somewhere else. He tells Arjuna that Brahman, the deathless and the unending rest on him, whatever the hour brings. In that corridor, this means she can stop asking the clock to hold her up. She lets her hands rest open, says a name, and asks for steadiness rather than for a particular result. Fear narrows attention to the next bad thing, and a single fixed point lets the breath and the shoulders loosen a little. That is ordinary experience, and many people know it. The verse does not promise that the surgery goes well, and it does not remove her fear or her grief if the news is bad. It does not replace the surgeons, who are the ones to rely on for her son's body. It speaks to where she stands while she waits.
