Whoever strives but does not rightly hold back speech and mind with a steady intellect loses his vow, his austerity and his giving. They drain away like water from an unbaked clay pot. So let the one who takes refuge in me hold back speech, mind and breath. With an intellect joined to devotion to me, the work is brought to completion.

Three practices are named. Vrata is a vow kept. Tapas is austerity, from the root tap, to burn: discomfort taken on willingly. Dana is giving. Krishna tells Uddhava that all three can be lost. If a striver does not rein in speech and mind with a steady intellect, the merit runs out, like water through the wall of a pot that was never fired. The pot looks whole and holds water for a moment, then it is empty. So Krishna gives the remedy. Because the practices leak, he tells Uddhava to hold back speech, mind and breath, and to do it as one who has made Krishna his parayana, his final refuge. The word means the place a person goes when there is nowhere else. Then he names what completes the work: an intellect joined with bhakti, loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Restraint keeps the pot from leaking. Devotion is what the vessel is for. The commentators read the last line this way: effort alone does not finish the journey, and surrender does. The teaching follows from the lines before it. Krishna has called his glories and powers movements of the mind and has told Uddhava to rein in speech, mind, breath and senses. Here he gives the reason. A careless tongue and a wandering mind undo the good already done. The verse asks the listener to guard the mouth and the mind, and to hand the guarding over to Krishna.

A garden hose with a small split near the tap. You can stand at the far end with a full bucket waiting, and only a trickle arrives. The water is good and the pressure is fine. The loss happens along the way. Merit leaks out through careless speech and a restless mind in the same way.

1. Choose one ordinary stretch today, such as a meal or a commute, and give it a single rule: no complaining, no sharp remark. 2. When a sharp word rises, stop and take three slow breaths before you answer. 3. Tonight, spend one minute on how many times the word nearly came out. Count them. Do not judge them. 4. Offer the day's one good act, however small, to Krishna by name before you sleep.

A man has fasted all day for a family vow. At the evening meal his brother-in-law makes a joke about his job, and he snaps back with something cruel. The table goes quiet. The fast is not undone in any physical way, but the day he meant to offer now feels spoiled. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First, the leak is seen where it actually happens, in the mouth and the thought just before it. Second, the breath is held back and slowed, which ordinary experience says calms the body a little before the reply forms. Third, the intellect decides what to say. Fourth, the day is handed to Krishna, so that the vow is not a score the man is keeping for himself. Ordinary experience confirms one thing: a hungry, tired person finds restraint harder, so the leak is most likely at the end of a hard day. The verse does not promise the joke will stop hurting, or that the brother-in-law will change. It also does not replace medical advice about fasting for anyone who is unwell.
