Meaning · English

So, eating in measure, he sits settled on a seat of kusha grass, a deer skin, a tiger skin, a blanket, or the bare ground, facing east or north. Having come to the cleansing of the nadis, he practises pranayama.

The verse opens with a word meaning 'thus', so it closes what came before: measured eating. Mitahara is eating in measure, neither too little nor too much. Gheranda has just given the beginner's diet, and this verse carries it into the seat and the posture. The seat comes next. The text lists five choices: a mat of kusha grass, an antelope skin, a tiger skin, a blanket, or a seat on the ground itself. It names no reason for any of them and does not rank them. It only says the practitioner sits well settled, which is the sense of the word for seated here. Then the direction, east or north. Again the verse gives no reason and states it as a rule. The last line names the work. Nadi shuddhi is 'nadi' plus 'shuddhi'. Nadi means channel, the tradition's word for the pathways along which prana moves. Shuddhi means cleansing. The text's own heading is 'Now, the cleansing of the channels', and the verse says the practitioner reaches this first. Pranayama is 'prana' plus 'ayama'. Prana is breath or vital force, and ayama is extension or restraint. The verse says pranayama is practised once the nadi cleansing has been taken up, so the cleansing comes before the breath practice proper. So the verse asks four things of a practitioner: eat in measure, sit on a plain, firm seat, face east or north, and begin with cleansing before anything stronger. Nothing here is a long hold or a strain. The text counts this as the gentle opening, and pranayama is learnt with a teacher, not from a page.

A retired schoolteacher folds a blanket on the floor at dawn, sits on it, and waits a few minutes before she breathes in any particular way. Much of what the verse asks fits that scene. A firm, folded seat that keeps the cold of the floor off is sensible. Sitting on it comfortably matters more than which material it is. Animal skins are not needed today. Eating in measure also fits ordinary experience. A very full stomach crowds the breathing and makes slow, deliberate breathing uncomfortable. Most people find slow, quiet breathing calming, and starting gently is what a good teacher would advise. The direction is the tradition's rule. Nothing in physiology gives east or north any effect on the body. It may reflect the habit of facing the sunrise. The nadis and their 'cleansing' are likewise the tradition's account. They match no structure in anatomy. What the practice does measurably is change how you breathe. Anyone with a breathing, heart or pregnancy-related concern should ask a doctor before breath practice.
