Moderate Food First

Gheranda Samhita 5.16

Meaning · English

Whoever begins the practice of yoga without moderate eating will find many diseases come to him, and no success in yoga will be reached at all.

The heading names the subject: mitahara, moderate eating. Mita means measured, ahara means food taken in. So it is not a menu. It is a measure. The verse is a warning, and it makes two claims. The first is that a person who starts yoga practice without moderate eating will meet many kinds of illness. The second is that in that case yoga will not succeed even a little. The word for success here is siddhi, the working out of the practice, the fruit it is meant to bear. Gheranda tells Chanda that food comes before the work, not after it. The reason the verse gives is plain and in two parts: diet without measure brings sickness, and sickness stops the practice from ripening. The verse does not say what the measure is. The verses after it go on to name grains, pulses and vegetables. Here the text only sets the rule that the whole of the practice stands on. What it asks of a practitioner is that eating be settled before the breath work begins, since the breath practices of this chapter are the very ones that need a steady body. The verse is also blunt: it says not partial success but none. That is the text's own strong claim, a teacher's way of stressing how much weight it puts on food.

A woman working a night shift snatches a heavy meal at three in the morning, then tries to sit and breathe quietly at dawn. She feels bloated, restless, and short of breath. Many people will know this. A good family doctor would agree that how much and when we eat affects how comfortable it is to sit still, to breathe deeply, or to bend. A very full stomach crowds the diaphragm, and very little food can leave a person light-headed and unable to focus. Regular, moderate meals are also sound general advice for health. What the doctor would not say is that poor eating alone makes yoga fail completely, or that one habit brings many diseases. That is the text's strong way of speaking, and it has no exact modern match. Nor does the verse itself define moderate, so today's advice has to be fitted to the person: age, work, health, and any condition that calls for a doctor's guidance. Fasting or severe restriction in the name of yoga can do harm, and the verse does not ask for it.
