Seasons to Avoid Starting
Gheranda Samhita 5.8
Meaning · English
In early winter, in the cold season, in summer and in the rains, one should not begin yoga. Begun in those times, yoga becomes a giver of disease.
The heading, kala-nirnaya, is 'the settling of time'. Kala is time, nirnaya is a firm decision. The verse settles when a person should not start. It names four seasons. Hemanta is early winter, when the cool weather first sets in. Shishira is the cold season, the deep chill with dew and mist. Grishma is the hot season, and varsha is the rains. Those are the four periods in which Gheranda tells Chanda not to begin. The key phrase is yoga-arambha, 'the beginning of yoga'. Arambha means a start. The verse forbids starting, and it says nothing about a practice already under way. It concerns the first day, not every day after it. The warning is in the last word, rogada. Roga is disease and da means giver. Yoga begun in these seasons is said to give illness instead of health. The verse offers no reason and no mechanism. It states the consequence and stops. The commentaries on the other hatha manuals are not printed here, so no explanation can honestly be added. The text simply treats the season of the year as part of the preparation, in the same way it treats the hut and its surroundings. What it asks of a practitioner is patience at the doorway. A person who wishes to begin first looks at the calendar and waits for a better season. In the text's view, the start itself needs the right weather around it. The claim of disease is the tradition's own, set down as a rule for beginners.
A grandfather decides, on a stifling afternoon before the monsoon, that today he will finally start. Ten minutes on the floor and he is drenched, dizzy and put off. That small scene holds what is well established. Extreme heat makes any exertion harder, and dehydration and overheating are real risks. Extreme cold leaves muscles and joints stiff until they are warmed. A mild room makes a first attempt easier and a habit likelier to stick. That is a matter of comfort and caution, and it has little to do with the calendar. Nothing in general medical knowledge says that the month in which someone starts decides whether the practice brings illness. The claim that yoga begun in these four seasons gives disease has no support, and it should be read as the tradition's own teaching. The season scheme is also local. It describes the climate of the Indian plains, where the rains and the summer heat are severe. Someone living elsewhere has different weather, and the same four names do not fit it. What carries over is the habit of choosing a moderate time and place to begin. The fixed list of seasons does not carry over.
