Preparing for Pranayama
Gheranda Samhita 5.2
Meaning · English
First the place, then the season, then measured food. After these, the cleansing of the nadis. Only then should breath-restraint be taken up and made one's own.
The verse is a list in order, a sequence of steps that comes before the breath work itself. Gheranda gives it to Chanda as the opening of the chapter on pranayama. Take the terms one at a time. Sthana is the place: where the practice is done. Kala is the time, which in the hatha manuals means the season of the year as well as the hour. Mitahara is made of mita, measured, and ahara, food. It means eating in measure, neither too much nor too little. Nadishuddhi is the cleansing of the nadis. The nadis are the channels through which the tradition says prana, the vital breath-energy, moves. They are the tradition's account of the subtle body, not anatomy. Pranayama is prana plus ayama, the extending or restraining of the breath. The verse gives its order but no reason for it. The reasoning has to be read from how the sequence is built. Three outer conditions come first: where one sits, when one sits, and what one has eaten. The inner cleansing follows, and the breath practice comes last. The chapter works from the outside inward. The word "then" is repeated, and it is the point of the verse. Pranayama is not entered directly. It is approached through the life around it, and then through a cleansing of the channels the breath is said to travel. A practitioner is asked to arrange the conditions first and to treat the breath as the final step.
A man has just moved to a new city and cleared a corner of his rented room for a few minutes of slow breathing each morning. He puts the mat away from the window noise and does it before breakfast. Without knowing it, he has followed this verse's first three steps. The ordinary advice agrees in outline. A quiet, steady spot, a regular hour and a moderate meal make any calm practice easier. A full stomach makes deep breathing uncomfortable, and irregular sleep and eating are well known to unsettle mood and energy. Slow, unforced breathing is generally found calming, though how much it does beyond that is still debated. The fourth step has no modern match. Nadis do not appear in anatomy, and nothing measurable corresponds to their cleansing. It is the tradition's own idea. The later breath-holding practices of this chapter can bring dizziness or strain if forced, so a teacher matters more than the list.
