Seven Gains of Practice

Gheranda Samhita 1.9

Meaning · English

Cleansing, firmness, steadiness, patience, lightness, direct perception, and freedom from stain: these are the seven attainments through which the vessel is brought to perfection.

After saying the body is a leaky unbaked pot that must be fired, Gheranda lists what the firing is meant to bring. The text calls them sapta sadhana, seven attainments, and the verse names seven results, one after another. Shodhana is cleansing, the making clean of the body that the whole first chapter is about. Dridhata is firmness, a body that does not give way. Sthairya is steadiness, staying settled without shaking or restlessness. Dhairya is patience or courage, the nerve to carry on without being pushed off course. Laghava is lightness, an ease of the body. Pratyaksha is direct perception, seeing for oneself rather than by report. Nirlipta is being unstained, not smeared or clung to by what one touches. The word ghata, the vessel, is the body, the same pot of the earlier verses. The verse gives no methods. It only says what a practitioner is to look for, so that the path has a list of aims before it has a list of practices. The text teaches this as a ladder, and the verses that follow tie each aim to a practice. The verse itself gives no reasons beyond the naming, and no commentary is printed here. It asks of the practitioner that the work be judged by these seven marks and not by feats.

A woman recovering from a long illness climbs her stairs each morning, a little further each week, and notices that what returns first is not strength but steadiness, then patience with her own pace. That fits an ordinary understanding of regular, gentle practice: strength, balance, calm and ease of movement tend to improve with steady repetition, and a good family doctor would say much the same of walking or stretching. The tradition's wider claims go beyond this. Pratyaksha, direct perception of the self, and nirlipta, being unstained, are inner aims that physiology neither confirms nor refutes. Cleansing, shodhana, has a loose modern echo in hygiene and good habits, but the old idea of purifying the vessel has no exact match. Some of the cleansings this chapter goes on to describe can hurt a person who tries them from a page, and are learnt with a teacher or left alone.
