Deeds Make the Vessel

Gheranda Samhita 1.6

Meaning · English

From good deeds and bad deeds the body of living beings is born. From the body, action arises again, as the wheel of a water-drawing machine goes round.

Gheranda uses the word ghata, which means a clay pot and also the body. The body is a pot: made, filled, carried about, and in the end broken. The verse says what the pot is made from. Sukrita are good deeds, dushkrita are bad ones, and together they are karma, action with its fruit. Living beings, the text says, are born with a body that these deeds have shaped. That is the first half: deeds make the body. The second half turns it round. Once there is a body, it acts, and those acts become new karma. So the body is both result and cause. Then comes the image. A ghatiyantra is a wheel with pots tied to it, used to lift water from a well. Pots go down empty, come up full, and go down again. Nothing in the wheel ever stops by itself. The cycle of body, deed and body is likened to this. The verse does not say how to get off the wheel. It only describes it. The reason the text teaches it here is to set up the need for a remedy, which the lines after it take up. For a practitioner the plain sense is that the body is not a neutral starting point. It carries history, and what it does next adds to that history. The verse asks nothing yet. It states the problem that the cleansings, the subject of this first chapter, are meant to answer.

A man in his sixties sits at the edge of his bed each morning, rubbing a stiff knee, and thinks about the years of work that put it there. That small scene holds what the verse says: a body is shaped by what has been done with it, and what it can do next depends on that shaping. Today's mainstream understanding agrees in a limited way. Habits of movement, food, sleep and stress leave lasting marks on the body, and the body's condition in turn changes what a person chooses and can manage. A good family doctor would recognise the loop. Inheritance and chance also play a large part, which the verse does not mention. What has no modern match is karma as moral cause, where good and bad deeds in earlier lives build a body in this one. That is the tradition's account, and medicine neither supports nor tests it. Nor is there any physiological counterpart to rebirth. What carries over is modest: a body is not a fresh start, and caring for it is part of living with the consequences of how it has been used.
