The verse and its meaning · Yoga Sutras · Om
Om, the Name
Yoga Sutras 1.27
Meaning · English
The word that names him is Om. It tells of him and points to him, and he is known through it.
Three words carry this sutra. Tasya means "of him" or "his." Vachaka comes from the root vac, to speak, and means that which tells or expresses. Pranava is the syllable Om, built on a root meaning to sound forth. Put together: Om is the word that expresses him. His, expresser, Om. Nothing is left over. Who is "him"? The sutras just before this one describe Ishvara, a special Purusha, untouched by affliction and by the fruit of action. A description alone gives the mind little to hold. It can admire a description and still have nothing in its hand. Patanjali now gives the name, so that what has been described can be called to mind. The sutras after it put that name to use. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes Om to be the name that expresses Ishvara, and takes the tie between name and named to be already there, not newly invented. The later commentators follow him in this. Where they differ is in explaining how a word comes to be joined to its object, not in whether Om is his name.
A child hears her grandmother's name spoken in a doorway and at once sees the face, the voice, the kitchen. The sound is small, but it carries the whole person with it. Om is offered the same way: a short sound that carries the one it names.
1. Choose a quiet moment today, such as just after waking or before a meal. 2. Recall, in a sentence or two, what the sutra says Ishvara is: a special Purusha, untouched by affliction and by the fruit of action. 3. Say Om once aloud, slowly, while keeping that meaning in mind. 4. Notice whether the sound and the meaning arrive together or apart. Do this for about three minutes. Nothing more is asked.
